A few weeks ago I noticed a funnel-shaped spider web along the grass next to a roof drain. I asked around to see if anyone knew what kind of spider weaves such a web. No one knew, so I looked it up, and what do you know - the funnel web spider. Unlike their
Aussie counterparts most of the
U.S. species are pretty harmless, and
pretty common. They make sheet-like webs that narrow down to a funnel-like cave, in which they chill out or eat their catch. The funnels are around an inch in diameter on average.
Anyway, now that you know, here are some photos from 10 different webs found around my house.
